Landscape design

How do design constraints lead to interesting solutions?

When we began working on this garden, a southern magnolia had already been growing there for 30 years. The entire soil area around it was a massive root plate. We always strive to preserve mature trees and avoid damaging their roots. Consequently, we had very few options for planting anything in this area.

Later, within the overall light-toned design of the house and grounds, the builders selected heavy, rectangular, black light fixtures.

After analyzing the site, we decided to plant succulents with low soil-volume requirements in a thin layer of soil among the pebbles. To prevent the black color of the light fixtures from looking out of place, we integrated it with black stone and black containers, which we also filled with stone and succulents.

The result is a rockery with a small collection of succulents which, despite a certain artificiality, integrates beautifully into the concept of a neat, well-manicured garden, situated in the entrance area between the courtyard gate and the house entrance.

We are certain that the owners of the garden will not stop here, and their collection of succulents will continue to grow.

Thus, a challenging situation resulted in a small collector's garden.

Succulents were chosen as a design element: minimal soil volume requirements and maximum expressiveness of form.
Black rectangular light fixtures integrated with black stone and succulent-filled containers in a light-toned garden
The black color of the light fixtures is echoed by the black stone—turning an accidental element into a recurring design motif.
