Let us go into the garden, I will show you to the roses.
The breeding of which plant will never cease? Roses, of course! The most romantic and desirable flower. Do they have a place in the modern garden? Might such a garden be deemed old-fashioned? A modern garden is, rather, about new design methods, the search for new combinations, using familiar plants in a different way, combining them with new species—where "old-fashioned" plants acquire a new resonance. A modern garden also entails the use of resilient plants. In the case of roses, the list of cultivars and hybrids is endless. Aside from growth habit, flowering duration, color, fragrance, and flower shape and size, the selection criteria must include resistance to diseases and environmental conditions. Integrating roses into garden biotopes with other plants helps them avoid mass pest infestations and diseases, increases their resilience, and helps them retain moisture. The use of roses in large mass plantings is highly relevant today. Certain species roses, their hybrids, and cultivars are capable of tolerating salt, clay, and drought—for example, the rugosa rose.
The desire to plant roses in a garden will only be successful with the correct choice of both the rose itself and its location in the garden.
