The Right Tree in the Right Place

The Tree as a Long-Term Asset

February 14, 2026

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. And if not then, then now.

(Chinese proverb)
A carefully positioned tree providing natural shade in a contemporary garden
A tree is a living asset that demands respect for its space and biorhythms.

A high-quality tree, properly selected for the specific conditions of the site, will become a lasting asset to your property. It will protect you from heat, wind, dust, noise, and prying eyes. It will bring flowers, fruit, beauty, and peace of mind.

A deciduous tree on the south side of the house will shade it from the scorching sun in summer, and allow these rays through after leaf fall during the colder season. An evergreen tree will protect against cold winter winds.

For a tree to bring joy and not become a problem, it is essential to consider all site conditions and select a tree for which they will be ideal.

Select a tree in accordance with the characteristics of the site, so that you do not have to alter the site conditions or replace the tree later.

It is crucial to consider the mature size of the tree; those 10–15 years only seem like an eternity, and suddenly a small tree turns into a monster disproportionate to its space, which they clumsily attempt to tame with improper pruning.

It is important to understand that the roots of most trees are located in the upper soil layer, with a root feeding zone comparable to the diameter of the canopy, and sometimes even larger.

It is crucial to note that trees and lawns are most often incompatible. Young and mature trees alike tolerate lawn installation particularly poorly. They are ill-suited to dense turf cover, as well as lawn fertilization and irrigation regimes.

It is vital to preserve the integrity of the bark, preventing damage and girdling.

Never plant a tree if it is to be confined to a hole in asphalt, concrete, or paving. Never plant a tree if it is to be pruned haphazardly, or if it will be constantly struck by cars, string trimmers, or anything else. Trees are far too noble creations; to thrive, they require respect and an understanding of their needs.
