A striking architectural focal plant valued for its symmetrical blue-grey rosette and sculptural presence. Particularly effective in terrace pots and contemporary Mediterranean planting where strong form is needed year-round.
Yucca rostrata, the beaked yucca, is one of the most architectural plants of contemporary Mediterranean and Californian gardens, producing a perfect spherical head of narrow blue-grey arching leaves atop a thickening single trunk. The leaves are unusually soft and flexible — almost grass-like — without dangerous spines. Tall creamy-white flower spikes rise dramatically above the foliage from late spring through summer — typically May to July — on mature plants. Hardy to -20°C, exceptionally drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, tolerant of poor stony alkaline soils and full sun, Yucca rostrata is one of the most elegant and useful structural yuccas available for any Mediterranean garden.
Beaked yucca grows slowly to 2–4 m tall over many years, with a single straight trunk supporting a perfect head of blue arching leaves like an ornamental fountain — one of the most photogenic of all Mediterranean garden plants. Use as a single sculptural specimen in modern compositions, in pairs flanking gates and steps, in groups of 3 or 5 for a contemporary xeriscape statement, and in large flat terracotta pans where the spherical head reads against pale stucco and gravel. The blue-grey palette combines exquisitely with the silver of Olea europaea, the dark of Cupressus, the warm tones of Agave attenuata and the architectural forms of Echinocactus grusonii. Underplant with low-spreading succulents — Delosperma cooperi, Sedum — and silver groundcovers.
