An architectural yucca with soft, flexible leaves, making it the rare yucca choice that delivers strong sculptural form without hazard. Particularly effective in terrace pots and family gardens where presence and practicality both matter.

Yucca elegans (sometimes sold as Yucca gigantea or Yucca elephantipes when smaller) is a tree-form yucca with long sword-shaped sea-green leaves arranged in dense rosettes atop thickening trunks, gradually building a multi-stemmed sculpture over decades. Tall stiff stems of fragrant cream-white bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage in late spring through summer. Active growth occurs in warm weather; the plant rests in cooler periods. Hardy to -5°C, exceptionally drought-tolerant, the yucca tolerates poor stony soils, alkaline conditions, salt spray and reflected heat from walls and paving. Tip spines are soft and not sharp.

Yucca elegans reaches 3–8 m tall over decades, with multiple branching trunks creating a dramatic candelabra silhouette. Use as a primary architectural plant in dry borders, as a sculptural focal point in contemporary courtyards, in large terracotta pots flanking entrances, and as a single specimen against pale walls where the elegant form reads as a living sculpture. The blue-green leaf colour combines beautifully with the silver-grey of Olea europaea, the dark verticals of Cupressus, and the warm tones of stone and terracotta. Pair with Agave attenuata, Aloe vera, Aeonium 'Zwartkop' and Stipa tenuissima for a textured xeriscape composition. Slow growth means a young plant remains a designed scale-element for many years.
