Larger than Strelitzia reginae, this varietal is known for its large banana-like leaves, towering presence and striking white and blue flowers. It adds drama and a lush tropical flair to Mediterranean gardens. It’s equally at home in the ground or potted on terraces where it softens hardscapes.
Strelitzia nicolai, the giant bird of paradise, is a magnificent banana-like plant native to coastal South Africa. It produces enormous paddle-shaped leaves up to 2 m long arranged in a fan from a single growing point, gradually building a multi-stemmed clump. Unusual white-and-dark-blue beaked flowers appear from mature plants in late spring through summer, lasting weeks and resembling exotic birds. Hardy to -3°C with leaf damage but full recovery from the base, the plant grows actively in warm weather and pauses in cool winters. It tolerates drought, salt spray and coastal wind once established, and prefers protection from afternoon sun in the hottest inland regions.
Giant bird of paradise reaches 6–10 m in tropical conditions but more typically 4–6 m in the Mediterranean, with a powerful architectural presence that dominates any planting. Use as a single specimen in protected courtyards, against tall sunny walls, by entrance gates and in poolside compositions; multiple specimens create a tropical screening effect along property boundaries. Pair with the dark verticals of Cupressus sempervirens, the silver-grey of Olea europaea and the cascading foliage of Schinus molle for striking texture contrasts. Underplant with shade-tolerant evergreens — Aspidistra elatior, Clivia miniata, Trachelospermum — that flourish in the deep shadow it casts. Plant in a wind-sheltered position; strong winds shred the large leaves.
