A hardy rose bred for resilience and beauty in hot, dry climates. It produces abundant clusters of rich red, lightly scented flowers even in the height of summer, particularly striking amongst evergreens and in cloud gardens where it provides bold contrast.
'La Sevillana' is a vigorous Meilland landscape rose producing clusters of semi-double cherry-red flowers from late spring through autumn — typically May through November in the Mediterranean — with peaks in May–June and September–October. The bright red colour is sun-fast and does not fade or burn even in intense Mediterranean light, a quality that has made this rose the standard red landscape rose throughout southern Europe. The leathery dark green foliage shows strong disease resistance. Hardy to -20°C, drought-tolerant once established, the rose tolerates heat, poor soils, salt spray and minimal feeding — true 'plant and forget' performance.
'La Sevillana' grows 1–1.2 m tall and as wide, used most often as a low informal mass-flowering hedge along driveways, paths and property boundaries throughout Spain, Italy and Greece. The bright red cluster flowers are reliably visible against any background, but particularly striking against white-washed Mediterranean walls, terracotta paving and the silver-grey of Olea europaea and Lavandula. Plant in long unbroken drifts of 5, 10 or 30 for maximum impact. Pair with the blue of Plumbago auriculata, the yellow of Bulbine frutescens and Euryops pectinatus, and the chartreuse of Euphorbia characias. Trim back lightly in late winter — minimal pruning is needed thanks to the self-cleaning habit.
