A sculptural cactus with smooth, spineless pads that make it ideal for pots and terraces. In spring it produces soft yellow flowers followed by small ornamental fruit, adding seasonal interest to sun- exposed spaces.

Opuntia inamoena is a low-growing prickly pear native to Brazil, producing flat green segmented pads and bright yellow-orange cup-shaped flowers in late spring through summer — typically May to August. The flowers are short-lived but appear in successive waves, attracting bees. Small red-purple edible fruits follow on mature plants. Hardy to -5°C if kept dry in winter, exceptionally drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant and undemanding, the plant requires only sharp drainage and full sun. Like all Opuntia species, the pads bear tiny glochid spines that are extremely irritating to skin — handle with leather gloves and avoid planting near paths.

Reaching only 30–60 cm tall and spreading 60–120 cm wide, this small Opuntia is ideal for the front of dry borders, in gravel gardens, on slopes, in rockeries, and in large flat terracotta pans on sun-baked terraces. The geometric green pads contrast beautifully with the silver-grey of Olea europaea, Lavandula and Stachys byzantina; with the warm tones of Bulbine frutescens and Euryops pectinatus; and with the architectural forms of Agave attenuata and Aeonium. Use as a slow-growing groundcover where minimal maintenance is needed, and keep well away from areas where children, pets or visitors might brush against the glochids.
