A showstopping autumn grass whose airy plumes glow pink and purple from September to November. Its feathery form contrasts beautifully with golden grasses and bold structural plants in meadow planting.
Pink muhly grass produces an unforgettable cloud of pink-purple feathery flowers from September through November in the Mediterranean climate, transforming the autumn garden when most plants are fading. The fine blue-green leaves form a tidy upright clump 60 cm tall, with flower stems lifting the misty pink plumes to 90–120 cm. After flowering, the plumes fade to silver-tan and remain attractive through winter. Hardy to -15°C, exceptionally drought-tolerant, the grass thrives in poor sandy soils, full sun, and tolerates coastal salt spray; it resents heavy clay and shade. Native to North American prairies and coastal pinelands.
Muhlenbergia is most spectacular planted in mass — drifts of 10, 20 or 50 plants create a famous pink mist effect in autumn, particularly when backlit by low morning or evening sun. Use along sandy paths, in coastal gardens, on dry slopes and in gravel beds; site facing east or west so the rising or setting sun lights the plumes from behind. Pair with the warm bronze of Schinus terebinthifolia, the orange of Lantana camara, the rusty stems of Stipa tenuissima and the dark green of Pistacia lentiscus. The pink autumn display contrasts beautifully with the blue of Plumbago auriculata blooming at the same time. Cut down hard in late winter.
