A bold evergreen perennial with sculptural, upright stems and luminous yellow-green flower bracts in spring. Native to the region, it thrives in dry, poor soils and brings structure and resilience to Mediterranean gardens.

Euphorbia characias is a defining structural plant of the Mediterranean garden, producing tall stiff stems of narrow blue-grey leaves topped in late winter through spring — February to May — by large pyramidal heads of chartreuse-yellow bracts surrounding small flowers. The bracts last for months and gradually fade through cream to brown. In the Mediterranean it is essentially evergreen, providing year-round structure and silvery colour. Hardy to -10°C, drought-tolerant, the plant resents heavy rich soils and overwatering. The milky white sap is highly irritating to skin and eyes — wear gloves when pruning, and avoid planting where children play or pets graze.

Forming a rounded clump 1–1.2 m tall and as wide, Euphorbia characias is a major architectural plant for dry borders, gravel gardens and slopes. Its strong vertical stem structure and chartreuse flower heads create powerful seasonal punctuation against the muted greens, silvers and ochres of the Mediterranean palette. Cut spent flowering stems back to the base in early summer to make room for new growth that will flower the following year. Pair with the deep blue of Salvia rosmarinus, the purple spires of Salvia 'Caradonna', the pink of Cistus and the warm yellow of Euryops pectinatus; the chartreuse flowers also work as a brilliant counterpoint to the magenta of Bougainvillea and Lantana montevidensis.
