A striking sculptural focal point with a perfect spherical form and radiant golden spines. Ideal for dry, sun-exposed areas, it adds strong architectural appeal and pairs beautifully with Mediterranean and contemporary planting schemes.
The golden barrel cactus is one of the most photographed plants of the Mediterranean garden, forming an almost perfectly spherical ribbed body covered in dense golden-yellow spines. It is native to central Mexico and IUCN-listed as endangered in the wild, but widely propagated in cultivation. Growth is very slow — about 1–2 cm per year — eventually reaching 60–90 cm in diameter and height. Yellow flowers appear in a crown around the apex from late spring to summer on plants over 20 years old. Hardy to -4°C if kept dry in winter, the cactus tolerates extreme drought, reflected heat and full sun once established; cold wet winters and shaded positions cause rapid rot.
Golden barrel is the archetypal accent plant of contemporary Mediterranean and Californian xeriscapes. Use single specimens as sculptural focal points in gravel beds, raised planters and large terracotta pans; group three, five or seven for a striking massed composition; or line them along stair edges and pool deck transitions. The geometric form and warm golden colour read powerfully against modernist concrete, charcoal-grey gabions and pale stone. Companion plant with Agave attenuata, Aloe vera, Aeonium 'Zwartkop', Stipa tenuissima and Delosperma cooperi for a textured, water-wise composition. Allow at least 1 m clearance from paths and seating — even small plants are formidably spiny.
