A boldly architectural evergreen with a striking branching pattern and exotic, otherworldly form. Older trees produce small, fragrant flowers from May to June, adding to its dramatic presence.

Dracaena draco is an iconic Mediterranean and Macaronesian tree, native to the Canary Islands but a defining presence in classical gardens throughout the western Mediterranean. It grows extremely slowly — perhaps 5–10 cm per year — and only branches after first flowering, which can take 10–15 years. The branches divide dichotomously after each subsequent flowering, gradually building the famous umbrella-shaped crown over centuries. Greenish-white flower clusters appear in summer on mature plants, followed by orange berries. The sap is dark red and was once collected commercially as 'dragon's blood', used as a varnish and pigment. Hardy to -3°C, the tree tolerates drought, salt and poor stony soil but resents cold wet conditions.

In a private garden, Dracaena draco starts as a simple silver-blue rosette of sword-like leaves but becomes architecturally majestic over decades. Plant young specimens as single focal points in gravel gardens, dry borders and contemporary planting compositions; pair with other slow architectural plants — Cycas revoluta, Yucca rostrata, Agave attenuata — to create a long-term sculpture garden. The thick smooth grey trunk and umbrella crown contrast dramatically with low Mediterranean groundcovers like Delosperma, Sedum and Erigeron karvinskianus. In coastal and Canary-influenced gardens, mass small specimens for a primeval, prehistoric atmosphere; on terraces and rooftops, a single young dracaena in a large square pot is a powerful sculptural mark.
