A striking evergreen perennial that brings bold, trumpet-shaped orange or yellow flowers to shaded areas from February to April. Its broad, strap-like leaves form lush clumps that thrive beneath trees, in north-facing courtyards and in pots tucked into shadowy corners.
Native to South African forest understorey, Clivia adapts beautifully to the shaded courtyards and north-facing borders of Mediterranean gardens. It produces dense umbels of trumpet-shaped flowers in deep orange — also available in yellow, peach and cream — from late winter through early spring, just when most of the garden is dormant. The thick strap-like dark green leaves are evergreen and remain decorative all year. Once established, Clivia is exceptionally drought-tolerant, surviving long dry summers under the canopy of evergreen trees. It is hardy to -3°C and tolerates poor soil and minimal feeding; flowering is actually improved by being slightly pot-bound and dry in autumn.
Clivia forms steadily expanding clumps 40–60 cm tall and wide, perfect for the front of shaded borders and as a long-term groundcover beneath citrus, olive and carob trees. The bright orange flowers are spectacular in late winter when little else is in bloom, particularly when contrasted with the dark glossy foliage of Aspidistra and the lacy green of Asparagus densiflorus. Plant in drifts along shaded paths and stairs, in low retaining walls under canopy, or in large terracotta pots in covered loggias and entrance halls — Clivia has been the classic pot plant of Mediterranean front rooms for generations. The yellow-flowered 'Citrina' form combines beautifully with deep purple Aeonium 'Zwartkop' for sophisticated colour-blocking.
