Ideally suited to the Mediterranean's hot, dry summers, foxtail agave forms elegant rosettes of soft, arching blue-green leaves that make a striking focal point in terrace pots and tropical-themed gardens. Its sculptural presence adds architectural appeal without the sharp spines of most agaves.
Native to central Mexico but perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate, foxtail agave grows steadily through the cool damp half of the year and slows during the dry summer. Mature specimens produce a remarkable arching flower spike up to 3 m long, resembling a fox's tail, from late spring through early summer; the rosette dies after flowering but typically leaves several offsets. Unlike most agaves the leaves are spineless and pliable, making this species safe near paths, seating areas and children's play zones. It tolerates drought, salt spray and coastal wind, but suffers below -3°C and demands free-draining soil.
Foxtail agave forms rosettes 1–1.5 m wide and reaches 1.5–2 m at maturity, with a soft silver-blue palette that pairs beautifully with the warm tones of terracotta. Use it as a structural anchor in dry borders, mass-plant on slopes for an undulating sea of blue rosettes, or place a single specimen in a large container by an entrance or pool. Strong companions include Cordyline, Aloe, Echium candicans, Lavandula, Salvia rosmarinus and ornamental grasses such as Stipa tenuissima. The smooth sculptural form contrasts well with the spiky outlines of Yucca and the lacy foliage of Schinus molle, and the silvery leaves echo the sun-bleached colours of Mediterranean architecture.
