Aeoniums bring bold, sculptural interest to the garden with their striking rosettes of fleshy leaves ranging from bright green to deep burgundy. Their geometric forms and seasonal colour shifts add drama and texture to dry, coastal and drought- tolerant landscapes.
Unlike most succulents, Aeonium is a reverse-season grower in the Mediterranean: it grows actively through the cool, damp winter from autumn to late spring, then enters dormancy during the hottest summer months. During summer the rosettes close tightly and lower leaves drop — a natural adaptation to conserve moisture. This makes Aeonium exceptionally valuable in Mediterranean gardens, providing life and colour when most other plants rest, and requiring no watering at the peak of summer heat. Star-shaped yellow or pink flower clusters appear on branching stems from late winter to early spring on mature specimens.
Aeonium is among the most architectural plants of the dry garden, reaching 30–100 cm depending on species. Use it in gravel and rock compositions, rockeries, coastal gardens, low retaining walls and large terracotta containers, where its symmetrical rosettes read as living sculpture. It pairs beautifully with Agave, Sedum, Lavandula and ornamental grasses, creating a contrast of dense geometric forms against airy foliage. Dark burgundy cultivars such as Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop' stand out dramatically against pale stone and the silver foliage of olive trees, while bright green and variegated forms bring freshness to part-shaded corners beneath citrus canopies and large shrubs.
